A car on foreign plates. How long can you keep driving it?
You come for the season and the car stays by the house on its home plates. Almost everything you will find online is expressed as a number of days — and that number is not about the car. Below is what rests on the rules we have read, and it ends with a question for you rather than a verdict.
How long you may drive in Spain on foreign plates
There is no limit in days. Spanish law does not grant a non-resident «so many days» with foreign plates. The duty to register the car in Spain does not arise from how long the car has been here, but from its owner becoming resident in Spain.
The 183 days and the three months you will find online are about something else.
- 183 days is a test of a person's tax residency, not a deadline for the car. And it is not even the only test: you also become resident if the main centre of your economic interests is in Spain, even if you spent less time here.
- Three months is the period within which an EU citizen must register in the foreigners' register. That is about the person and their status, not about the car.
Once you are resident, a deadline about the car does start — thirty days to apply for registration. It runs from when the car starts being used in Spain, and it extends to sixty days in one case only: where the registration-tax exemption for a change of residence applies.
What happens if the duty is not met
The law expressly provides for immobilisation of the vehicle until its administrative and tax position has been regularised. Separately, the registration tax is assessed: using the car without having applied for registration in time is itself a taxable event.
The size of the fine depends on how the infringement is classified, and we do not state a figure: we have not located the rule that fixes one for this case, and unsourced numbers are already circulating online.
What the answer depends on in your case
On how much time you spend here, whether you are on the padrón, whether you are registered as a resident, and what your insurer says about a car kept abroad for months. Change one and the answer changes.
That is why nobody can answer this from a web page, including us. What we can tell you is which of these decides your case.
TÜV or MOT expired?
The Spanish test does not extend it. The Spanish ITV applies to vehicles registered, or to be registered, in Spain, while a foreign certificate lives in its own country's register — a Spanish station cannot restore it.
There is one lawful way out: register the car in Spain. The inspection is then done as part of the registration. Our 125 € inspection service does not help here — it is for cars that already carry Spanish plates.
If registering turns out to pay
Then it is a defined path with a fixed price, and you run none of it: what the path consists of, step by step →
Our fee for the whole route to Spanish plates is 900 € + VAT; the official taxes and fees are billed separately, at the amount the administration charges.
It is not about days, it is about status
Send us three dates — when the car entered Spain, when your padrón was issued, when you registered as a resident — and we will tell you whether the duty has already started for you and what to do about it.
