How to register a UK car in Spain

To register a UK car in Spain after Brexit you start at customs: a British car is no longer an intra-EU import. Everything after that is the same file as any other import — the inspection, homologation where the car needs it, the paperwork at Tráfico — and our fee stays the same €900 + VAT, with the official taxes confirmed once your documents are in front of us.

We do not sell paperwork. We sell the outcome: your car on Spanish plates.

What changes and what does not

How long can you drive a foreign-plated car in Spain? →

What changes is customs: a car from the United Kingdom now enters as a non-EU import and needs customs clearance. What does not change is everything else — import ITV, homologation with the reduced technical sheet, the DGT file and Spanish plates are exactly the same steps as for a German or Dutch car.

The papers we ask for

The key document is the V5C logbook in your name. With that, the invoice or bill of sale, your NIE and your padrón certificate we can tell you what the taxes come to before you commit to anything. A right-hand-drive car is registered the same way: in Spain it is not an obstacle.

Why we do not publish a tax figure

Because on a non-EU import the duty and VAT depend on the declared value, the invoice date and the actual customs paperwork. We would rather calculate it with your documents in hand than publish a number that does not hold. Our own fee is fixed: €900 + VAT.

Where it is filed

The file goes to the traffic office of your province

The file follows your padrón address — not the car, and not the address you kept in the UK. If you are registered in Alicante province it is an Alicante file at the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico there, whether the car came over by ferry or drove down through France. Appointments are booked through 060, the miDGT app or the DGT electronic office.

What we do

Check the V5C and the purchase documents before anything starts, clear customs, book the import inspection, arrange homologation when the car needs it, pay the fees and coordinate the filing.

What we are not

We are not an ITV station and not an official body. What we do is the legwork — the customs paperwork, the inspection booking and the DGT forms — so that a British file does not stall on a document nobody warned you about.

What you pay separately

The DGT fee, IEDMT where it applies and the town hall's IVTM. These are official taxes — passed on at cost.

ITV stations

Where your car takes its import inspection

British owners in this province are concentrated around Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa, and in the Marina Alta, so in practice the import inspection usually happens at Torrevieja, Orihuela or Ondara. The province also has fixed stations in Alicante, Benidorm, Elche, Novelda, Pilar de la Horadada, Redován, Alcoy and Villena, plus mobile units in Benissa, Calpe, Castalla, El Campello and Santa Pola. We pick by real availability and by where the car sits.

Dénia and Jávea have no station of their own: the nearest one for the Marina Alta is Ondara. That catches out most people who have just moved here.

Service area

We work across the whole province

Where British cars usually turn up: Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, Guardamar, Pilar de la Horadada, Santa Pola, Alicante, Benidorm, L'Alfàs del Pi, Altea, Calpe, Jávea and Dénia.

Inland the same service runs to Orihuela, Almoradí, Callosa de Segura, Crevillente, Elche, Aspe, Novelda, Elda, Petrer, Villena, Ibi, Cocentaina and Alcoy.

If your town is not on the list but sits in the province, write anyway: registration does not depend on distance, and we can move the car ourselves.

Tell us what the car is and where it came from

With the ficha técnica or COC and the foreign registration document we give you the full cost before anything starts. IEDMT is always a preliminary estimate until it is confirmed against the final technical sheet.

Don't have the car yet?

We search the German market on your instruction and bring the car through to Spanish plates. You buy it from the seller — we are not a dealer and hold no stock.
